About

Stark County SWCD

Our Purpose

Conserving Illinois' Natural Resources since March 5,1943

Our District was organized to provide a cooperative organization through which all people and agencies may work in a united manner toward the improvement and consideration of our soil, moisture, woodland and wildlife. By so doing we shall maintain or increase the standard of living of the people within our District and be able to leave fertile soils for our children.

The roads leading to our main objective seem to be marked with:

1. Help win the war by assisting as many farmers as possible to increase production NOW with no more damage to the land than is necessary.

2. Make every owner and operator of land conscious of the fact that this land of ours is the only to use and that the abuse reduces income, land values, and the opportunities of future generations.

3. Cooperate with all local, State and Federal agencies who will be able to help us obtain our objective.

Our Story

with passion

Following the devastation of the Dust Bowl in the 1930s, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt recommended the Standard State Soil Conservation Districts Act be signed into law by all state governors. This act gave states a step-by-step guide to create conservation districts and listing their powers and responsibilities. By July 1, 1945, all 48 states had passed district-enabling acts.

Stark County Soil & Water Conservation District was formed April 16, 1943 by majority vote of landowners located in the county. Since our organization, we have worked expensively to protect and reinforce the importance of education in conservation and preservation practices.

“Out of the long list of nature's gifts to man, none is perhaps so utterly essential to human life as soil.”

- Hugh Hammond Bennett the "Father of Soil Conservation"
